Quality Improvement and Safety
As a masters prepared nurse, we will be expected to analyze information about quality initiatives to improve health outcomes across the continuum of care. We will also need to implement evidence-based plans based on trend analysis and quantify them based on their effect on quality and safety. Equally as important will be our contribution to the integration of health care services through safety and quality care that improve patient outcomes and reduce fragmentation of care.
I attended a live stream webinar "Chronic Pain Guidelines and Controlled Substance Abuse Efforts" which addressed abuse, addiction, misuse of controlled substances (CS) and resulting negative sequela to patient and public safety in Tennessee. This program is an example of a quality initiative to improve health outcomes for the citizens of Tennessee. This lesson is imperative for my practice and was a good addition to my education.
Another example of my competency in this essential is the work flow assignment/exercise that we completed in Informatics where we examined work flow in a patient care area and proposed a revision based on improved quality of care. In that assignment I examined the work flow in the recovery room I currently work in.
The Women's Health Issue and Research Assignment on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Health from the Healthy People 2020 initiatives would also fit into this competency as it addresses national benchmarks and access to care.
Finally, there was a data dive assignment from informatics where we were required to analyze information on a major website. This assignment was in line with recognizing the contributions of individuals and health care teams that improve health outcomes.
My weakness in this area is definitely my lack of knowledge of medicare and certain national benchmarks that we are responsible for knowing for our medicare patients.
My strength in this area comes from growing up in a nursing culture of performance measures, safety principles and quality standards. My masters' education has further prepared me for my advanced role.
