According to the American Nurses Association-Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, facilitation of healing, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations. At the conclusion of our nursing education, we make a solid pledge to our own personal commitment of accountability, professionalism, and compassion for the ill. This philosophy of nursing defines our journey as we embark on one of the most rewarding and respected professions in healthcare. 

 

My philosophy:

       One of my favorite nursing quotes is by Florence Nightingale: "Nursing is an art; and if it is to be made an art, it requires as exclusive a devotion,as hard a preparation, as any painter's or sculptor's work;for what is the having to do with dead canvas or cold marble, compared with having to do with the living body - the temple of God's spirit?It is one of the Fine Arts; I had almost said the finest of the Fine Arts". Nursing is an ART. For me it is a beautiful concoction of my education and my human experiences. I have absorbed the sciences I was fed and developed a passion for the art of caring for people. I concluded that in order for me to feel like I have been true to my profession, I need to look at my patient as a sum of parts, as a whole being. I need to care for them without judgement, racism or prejudice. I need to continue to learn day after day so that I may take care of my patients in the best way possible. I also need to look internally at what fuels my soul and if I feel a calling or a desire to improve lives of my patients, it is my duty to be a visionary and help progress nursing in the name of ART. I wish to use my knowledge and experiences to empower the people I care for to continually improve their own health and well being so that they may live the best life they can.
