Clinical Prevention and Population Health for Improving Health
This essential encompasses client-centered and culturally appropriate concepts in the planning, delivery, management and evaluation of evidence based clinical prevention interventions and population based care to individuals, families and populations. This includes nursing science, frameworks and theories. We had specific instruction in nursing theory and there are a couple of assignments that help support my competency in this area. The first is a reflective philosophy paper where I describe my world view and the second is a paper I wrote on a theory that fits best with the way I practice. The third is a theory analysis which is the basis for examining any theory that I as a practitioner may use in my practice.
My strength in this area is definitely my holistic view of nursing that is patient and family centered and culturally responsive. I've also always been drawn to working with more disparate populations and did so in my undergraduate nursing program as well. My weakness in this area was definitely knowledge of evidenced based practice especially in primary care with special attention on preventative care but we had ample opportunity in this master's program to learn this information.
Another example of meeting this competency was the Geriatric Health Promotion Project. With this project, my group and I were expected to provide an integrative, holistic approach that benefited a group of older adults. We identified a problem in a community setting related to older adult health and developed an intervention that included teaching about health promotion, health prevention, or health education. My student colleagues and I chose medication safety and taught a class at the Kingsport Senior Center. We had a powerpoint presentation, games, and handouts for them including a medication log.
A specific sample content example that was given that meets this essential addresses the emerging science of complimentary and alternative medicine and therapeutics. I am including a quiz/discussion board in Women's Health addressing hormone therapy.
